Gorillaz Masks for Spex

May 2017

I was commissioned by photographer and long time collaborator, Axel Hoedt to custom build face masks created from the Gorillaz apparel tee-shirts to accompany an article on the band for Spex Magazine. My concept behind these masks was to play on the idea of the fan art ego and how precious they can be about their copies of the original artist’s work. If it wasn’t for Jamie Hewlett, the original artist who created Gorillaz, there would be no fan art, so who is the one to be most respected?

It was an absolute pleasure and a perfect project to be involved in, as I’m a big fan of Jamie Hewlett’s illustrations of another world, who together with Damon Albarn created the Gorillaz phenomenon.

SPEX asked band members 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle and Russel Hobbs directly: What does fake mean here? Read More
